Oh no! It’s already 6 o’clock! Could this be a thaumaturgy or perhaps a deception?

Àbíké rose from the mat which she laid, wipes her eyes with her hands like someone ready to receive a great insight from an herbalist and stares deeper into the wall clock.

“Ye mogbe” Àbíké exclaimed and bounced like a trader who lost all his profit to bet Naija, panting intemperately like a woman who is in labour and hurriedly preparing like a bride who is about to miss her wedding hour.

She took her scarf from the set of clothes she had carefully arranged at a corner of her room and sets out to fetch some water from the stream like she does every morning.

“Good morning Papa”, Àbíké greeted her 55 year old uncle who was sitting outside and having a fruition of the pleasant morning with a keg of palm wine.

“What is so good about the morning, ehn, Àbíké, tell me, what particular good do you have for the morning if you can sleep your life off like a useless girl by waking up this ungodly hour”, Abike’s peevish uncle responded.

“I am sorry papa it’s just that…”

“It’s just that what?” Abike’s uncle interrupted. “My friend, you better get yourself to the stream now or else no food for you in this house, lazy stupid girl.”

With a pail in her hand, Abike rushed down to the stream which is 150 kilometres away from the village.

Her dawn had turned to dusk and calamity progressively became her closest friend since she lost her parents to a motor crash accident three years ago, having no choice but to stay with her uncle, popularly called oga Simon, as dictated by the Family’s head, olórí ebí.

The little young 16 year old old girl, after being panic-stricken with the unaffectionate words of her uncle, moved slowly towards the stream and reminisced how she once used to be happiest girl.

“Me Àbíké, the little adored doll of Mr & Mrs Johnson, whose piquant smile never ceases to illuminate the world of the Johnson’s, oh Lord, what’s left of my life if I remain enslaved by fate under the whips of this monster who calls himself my Uncle” Àbíké sobs softly as unavoidable tears gushes from her eyes like an overflowing water.
